pH levels in the Gas Stream

Introduction

A study into the PH levels from the HOH gas output has been conducted. It purpose is to establish a baseline for the normal PH level output in the gas stream. A series on control device have been built to provide an repeatable measuring technique along with standard measuring device.

The equipment used for these tests consisted on the following items:

A standard HOH Cell

  • 10% Concentration of electrolyte (NaOH) Alkaline
  • Gas production rate of 1 liter per minute
  • Voltage 12.7V at the cell
  • Amperage 15 AMP

This electrolyte reservoir has the standard labyrinth arrangement inside with no additional scrubbing materials in the labyrinth stand and in turn the gas exit port.

The cell was operated for 45 minutes to warm up (38ºC) prior to the first test being conducted.

Testing Equipment

Equipment consisted of:

  • A standard swimming pool PH testing kit
  • Clamp Amp meter
  • Non contact temperature gauge
  • Multi-meter used for voltage measurement at the cell
  • Water displacement – for volumetric testing

Control Devices

Gas Output Container:

  • 10mm Clear PVC Hose
  • Air Filter attached at end
  • 650mil of Water
Test Device

A test device has been built to determine what level the PH can be reduced by though a process of bubbling, labyrinths and scrubbing

This device consists of :

  • A gas in port (left bottom)
  • A gas bubbler (inside bottom)
  • Labyrinth Arrangement (Inside middle)
  • Gas scrubbing during gas exit (top middle)
Test Device Components

  • Bottom gas entry and gas bubbler
Labyrinth with 1/2? hex nut c/- 1mm centre drilled hole
Gas exit through inside collar, c/- 5 x 1mm holes drilled around collar to centre tube
  • Stainless Steel Wool inserted into neck of gas exit holes from scrubbing purposes.
  • This specific material was to be unsuitable due to corrosion of the stainless steel which contaminated the cell. It was also found that once the material became saturated it lost is usefuleness
  • PH Test Baselines

    pH 6.8 pH 7.4
    pH 7.6 pH 7.8
